Hello ,
Yes I missed a couple of weeks. My computer is going
through some upgrades and we have started to ship out
potatoes so my time has been a bit limited.

The last few weeks haven't been that exciting in the
world of potatoes, unless your from PEI and have been
told to grow something else. For all the details and
some of the different opinions visit Global Potato News
http://www.potatonews.com/news/us/2001/latest.htm

Agriculture Must Capture Market Opportunity

"We must finalize the elimination of unilateral trade
sanctions and open trade with these markets now. We must
increase market promotion and market access. We must pass
trade-negotiating authority. We must fight world hunger
with increased food assistance programs." Said Bob Stallman
the American Farm Bureau Federations president in an
address given before Farm Credit Council in San Antonio
Texas. For his full remarks go here:

PEI Wows and Troubles Continue

Environmentalists want potatoes off of the island, saying
the growth of the potato industry is destroying the
environment.
Politicians condemn Vanclief's potato comments which were:
"That's a business reality, If I'm selling widgets and my
buyer doesn't buy my widgets anymore, I'd better not keep
making widgets for that buyer."
PEI potatoes may not make it to McCain's New Brunswick
plant due to holding off on contract signing.

Idaho Growers Worried About Water Supplies

"Growers are worried whether there will be enough water to
go through the season," said Steve Reddy, University of Idaho
Extension. "We don't know how serious it's going to be."

A group of U.S. senators plan to send a letter to U.S.

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, urging that the USDA
continue to handle the Prince Edward Island (PEI) potato
wart issue on a scientific basis and to not allow trade
or other issues to influence the process. Story found on

John Hewlett, farm management specialist with the
University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service
(UW CES) has new software available that will help
determine operation-specific nitrogen needs.

The first program allows users to enter fertilizer
costs, crop prices, harvest costs and various levels of
fertilizer and associated yields. The output table
describes the most economical level of fertilizer to
apply given the constraints.
The second program analyzes fertilizer costs. Users
enter the cost per ton, the fertilizer nutrient
formulation and recommended application rates for up to
10 different fertilizer components in a mix. The
software then calculates the cost per pound of the
nutrient applied, cost per acre per nutrient, the number
of pounds of nutrient applied per acre and several
other factors.
The programs can be found here:
